The next couple of days will be filled with lots of details and pictures of our trip. I want to document our trip so that I can remember what we did...if that requires boring most people who read my blog, so it is. The digital world has really changed the way we take photographs. Instead of only having a roll of film (24 pictures) for one trip we now take about 1,000 pictures for a week-long trip. So here it goes....
Puerto Rico (Day 1)
Skyler and I spent three days in Puerto Rico before my family met with us there. It was a lot different than I expected. It was very touristy and rainy. We stayed in a hotel in Old San Juan called Hotel Milano. It was right in the middle of the town. There are a lot of places to see in Old San Juan. The best place we visited was Castillo San Cristobal. San Juan used to be a military fortress for the island. There was a wall surrounding the whole city. There are two bases that are still there--El Morro and Cristobal. It was so weird to see buildings that old. I am not used to it!
I apologize in advance. Skyler is the photographer in our family so he takes most of the pictures, which leads to me being in most of them. He is in more of the pictures as the days go on.
Inside a sentry at Castillo Cristobal
Old San Juan's streets are made with these blue weights. The weights were used in ships, but when the ships arrived in Puerto Rico, they unloaded the weights.
El Morro Base
This cemetery is between the two bases, right along the coast line. Old cemeteries are so neat looking.
Skyler, with the San Juan Bay in the background.
Of course cats are attracted to me. They feel the love I have for them, and then come out of hiding. I love this picture because you can tell how much the cat is loving my attention.
This is La Perla. It is also between the two military bases, but is outside of the city walls. It would be perfect property to own because it is on the beach, except for the fact that it is a slum. It is super shady. All of the buildings are run-down and falling apart. We were warned before so we knew not to go near it.
Old San Juan has a lot of hilly, narrow streets, similar to San Francisco. So it was ironic to find Calle San Francisco.
Coming up: Rainforest, best view of the island, and search for a beach
