Renegade Off-Road Triathlon

A few weekends ago we raced in the Renegade Off-Road Triathlon in San Dimas, CA. The triathlon was a 1/2 swim, 15 mile mountain bike, and 3 mile trail run. We didn't race alone...we had five friends that raced with us.

Even though I've done quite a few open water swims, I still get butterflies in my stomach right before. This was Kelly's first triathlon and open water swim. She survived the swim and managed to get a respectable time. We all did pretty awesome.

Carrie, me, Kelly, and Brenna

Much to my surprise, halfway through the swim I looked around and saw that me and one other girl were leading the pack. I managed to pull ahead and be the first woman out of the water.

Skyler swim 9:18
Elise swim 9:48

I would say that Skyler's strength is the bike, but he's just good at everything.

Skyler T1 1:17
Elise T1 1:38

Skyler Bike (2 laps) 35:59, 35:54
Elise Bike (2 laps) 49:02, 47:55

Skyler T2 0:36
Elise T2 1:35

Skyler Run 28:45
Elise Run 33:11

Skyler Total Time 1:51:52 - 2nd in age group and 4th overall
Elise Total Time 2:23:02 - 2nd in age group and 4th woman overall

The good thing about starting later than Skyler (and being slower) is that he is always there to cheer me through the finish line.

Carrie's husband and daughter also raced.

Team Sparkle represented themselves well at the race. There were lots of envious looks from other racers. The 1st place woman even bought a skirt the next day.

Like I mentioned before, Skyler got 2nd place in his age group, the 1st place man being the overall winner of the race.

Carrie and Kelly placed 2nd and 3rd in their age group, the 1st place woman was also the 1st place woman overall.

Brenna and I placed 1st and 2nd in our age group. Brenna was the 3rd woman overall and I was the 4th. We rode most of the bike course together, but she gained an extra minute on me during the trail run. Although I was disappointed I didn't keep up with her, I'm pretty sure she pushed me harder than I would have on my own.

All of us girls received an award. Must be that Team Sparkle power!

This was Jeff's (Kelly's husband's) first triathlon also. He placed 1st in his age group. There's nowhere to go but down (just kidding). Actually Jeff will be coming with us to Boise in June when we do our next half-Ironman.

As much as I love racing triathlon, racing them with friends is even better.

Good post. And it was actually a 15 mile mountain bike ride.

I'm glad you wore the Sparkle skirts! They must be magic!
