OC Duathlon

Saturday, May 22 Skyler and I raced in our first official duathlon. I say "first official" because we have raced several triathlons-turned-duathlons when the swim was canceled. And let me tell you, that sucks.

We decided at the last minute to sign up for this race since it was local and would be a good training race for Ironman 70.3 in Boise next month. The OC Duathlon consists of a 5k run, 38k bike, and 5k run. The bike course runs from Lake Forest, past Cook's Corner, and through Santiago Canyon, up to Irvine Lake and back. It was quite hilly, but we knew the course since it is the same as the OC Triathlon.

Skyler always continues to amaze me. His results:

5k run ~ 21:24 (6:54 pace)
38k bike ~ 1:06:37 (this includes both T1 and T2)
5k run ~ 22:11 (7:15 pace)
Total ~ 1:50:12 (earning him 6th in his age group)

My results? Well, let's just say that I haven't ran that fast in a long time (since high school)! My first mile was actually 6:45. I was flying! Here are my results

5k run ~ 23:15 (7:30 pace)
38k bike ~ 1:19:33 (again, includes both T1 and T2)
5k run ~ 24:07 (7:46 pace)
Total ~ 2:06:55 (I earned 5th in my age group)

One thing we learned about duathlons is that they are way more competitive than triathlons. Duathlons aren't glamorous, so people don't just do them for fun. The race field seemed to consist of triathletes who use duathlons as training. Either way, Skyler and I both had a great race and enjoyed squeezing one more race into our schedule.

Thanks! Our next race is Saturday, June 12 in Boise. It's another half-Ironman race.
