The Road to Oceanside

We did it! For the third year in a row, Skyler and I raced in the Ironman 70.3 California in Oceanside. Every year is a little different and this year definitely had the toughest conditions. Before I write my long recap, I have a few people to thank for getting me to this race. Triathlon is an individual sport, but that doesn't mean I got where I am by myself.

My girls. We swim together, we bike together, and we run together. It's awesome having friends who are also fellow triathletes. These girls are awesome and I love hanging out with them, whether we're getting lost on a mountain bike trail or eating donuts after swimming. Sometimes I need that little extra motivation to keep me going and these girls give it to me. I'm less likely to skip a workout if I know I'm meeting them. Thank you for pushing me.

Pumpkin
What can I say about this cute little dog? She is the one that I train with the most. I think about her a lot when I'm running races. I imagine her saying, this is as fast as you can run? Run faster! She gets me out of the house more than I'd like. Sometimes I try skipping my running workouts, but she won't let me. She loves to run and I think that's made me love running even more. We both enjoy trail running too. I only wish that she could race with me. The great part about running with her is that she runs at a consistent pace. Whenever I may slow down, she lets me know. A few weeks ago we went out for a run and about a mile into it she starts throwing up. I stopped running so we could walk slowly back home, but she wouldn't have it. She still wanted to run. She had to stop a few more times to throw up, but she kept running. Carrie, you should be proud of her. Thank you Pumpkin.

Brandon
I really wanted to improve my time from the previous year on this race, so I decided it was time to get some real help. I got a triathlon coach. One of Skyler's friends graciously took me on as a client. Let me tell you, it's a lot harder to skimp on a workout when you're accountable to someone. My training workload doubled and I pushed myself more than I ever had before. Sometimes I doubted the workouts, but I had faith that everything would come together in the end. He is a great coach and really paid attention to every workout I did. Thank you Brandon.

Skyler
There's nothing better than having the support of my husband. And not only did Skyler support me, he was also a training partner. He didn't have to take me on mountain bike rides, but he did. And I love him for that. He's patient and kind and optimistic about my abilities. He's also my inspiration. He's fast and I try to compete with him (but I don't come close). I love that we both train and race triathlons because I love being able to talk to him about my sport. I love him and couldn't have gotten to Oceanside without him. He's the one who encouraged me that I could do it in the first place. Thank you Skyler.
