Happy Birthday Dad!

Unfortunately, my dad's birthday falls during tax season. As much as my dad would like to enjoy his birthday, he always has a ton to do and not enough time to do it in.

Last night we gathered all of the family in town for dinner. (Eric is at school and Skyler is on a business trip in Texas.) My dad really wanted a home-cooked dinner for his birthday. My mom makes dinner for him every night, but he just wanted to enjoy her cooking again. I brought Jill to dinner as my surrogate husband for the night. Jill's husband is out of town too so we have been hanging out together to cover the sadness of missing husbands.

My dad is the best dad in the world (sorry to everyone reading this, but I got the best)! He is a hard worker and has distilled that characteristic in all of his kids. My dad and I have a special connection because we are both the oldest kids in our families. My dad loves to have the family together. Last summer we went on an amazing cruise to the Caribbean and everyone was there. Definitely one of the best family vacations ever!

One of my favorite memories with my dad is riding our bikes to the beach. When I was about 10 or 11 we started the tradition of riding our bikes from our house to the beach (about 26 miles). The first year we did the trip my dad got a flat tire and possibly on the same trip there was a huge detour. But what an adventure! It took us like three hours. I remember being hungry and tired. And on the last mile or two, there are usually heavy onshore winds. We continued the tradition for a few more years and we were joined by my sister and my brother. The bike ride was put on hold for a few years, but last year we started up the tradition again. And the tradition will carry on!

Thank you Dad for....everything! I love you!

It should also be noted that your mom makes a pretty mean cinnamon bunt (bundt?) cake. Wow, I could have have eaten that whole thing.

(Thanks again for the invite and for being such a dutiful stand-in-husband!)

Happy Bday Dad! Lots of fun. And great memories. I loved the beach bike ride! I'm so excited to be down here now so I can do it again!

I don't know if I am the best Dad (I doubt it) but I do have the best children in the world. And you Elise led the way by being a great example to your younger siblings. I truly appreciate your kind words. I loved the bike trips as well. We will have to do another bike trip to the beach soon.
