Race Report: Chapman 5k

The Chapman 5k boasts itself as the "fastest, flatest, and funnest 5k." This is the perfect race for Skyler and I because it is just a five minute walk from our house. We did this race last year and loved it!

I convinced my dad and Holly to do this race with me. I woke up the morning of and thought, what is that sound? Rain. Rain might ruin a triathlon, but it doesn't hurt a running race. Skyler ended up being out of town, so my dad, Holly, and I walked over to the race start together. It was still sprinkling a little bit, but it didn't really bother me.

We met up with the other girls of Team Sparkle. This was Carrie's daughter's first race. It was so fun to see her so excited!

The race began and I immediately wished I had started closer to the front. I was weaving around people left and right, but kept Holly in my sights. I told her I planned on beating her this time.

I stayed about 20 feet behind Holly for the entire race. I yelled words of encouragement to her, but she said she only heard me once. I was a little cautious running because although it had stopped raining, the streets were still wet and a little slippery.

Holly is fast, but still has time to make a goofy face for the camera.

I caught up to Holly right at the finish line, but she crossed 1.7 seconds in front of me. Immediately she started throwing up. It was great! I was so happy to see how hard my sister pushed herself.

Holly finished with a time of 22:22.8, putting her in 3rd place in her age group. My finish time was 22:24.5. I finished 2nd in my age group, although there was a mix-up with the results and they marked me as 3rd place (they ranked the results by gun time instead of actual time). Although this wasn't my fastest 5k time, I was still happy with it. I shrunk the gap between Holly and me.

It was fun seeing so many skirts at the race. There were a total of seven Team Sparkle skirts in the race. There's one photo that I wished I had, but somehow it didn't get taken. Jill joined us in the race. She signed up at the last minute and surprised me at the start line. It was so nice to see her, as we haven't gotten to hang out as much lately. Chapman University is Jill's alma mater, so I bet this was a pretty cool race for her.

I also missed getting a picture of me, Holly, and my dad together. My dad's time was 6 minutes faster than the Villa Park 5k. Congrats Dad!

It was fun! I'm glad I made it, if only to get to see you for a minute before you sprinted to the finish line!

I was bummed we didn't get any photo's, too...although I did take that one of you all at the end of your post. So I was kind of in it, right? just the wrong side of the camera. Oh well.

Congrats again on your SECOND place win!
