Race Report: Surf City 1/2 Marathon

Last year I ran a marathon. It was hard and I promised myself I would never do it again. So far, I'm holding strong. So as the Surf City full and 1/2 marathon approached again, Skyler and I chose to sign up for the 1/2. Skyler had taken a little time off after his Ironman and I've been training for the California 70.3, so it was the perfect winter race.

Last year I ran with my girls Carrie and Kelly. We signed up together, trained together, and wore the same skirts. On race day, we had a great time laughing, talking, and loving the compliments about our sparkle skirts.

One year later, we are all in different places. Carrie had a baby, Kelly suffered a running injury which left her out half the year, and I ramped up my training. But that didn't stop us from racing. Even though we didn't start in the same waves, we were all silently cheering each other on.

I had a goal and I planned on running consistently the entire 13.1 miles. Within the first 15 seconds, I spotted another woman wearing a turquoise Team Sparkle skirt. I caught up to her and found out that we had the same time goal, so we ran together the entire race. Of course we talked the entire time. She's a triathlete too and she's racing her first Ironman in May. I made a new friend.

I'm telling you, our Team Sparkle skirts have special powers because all three of us PRed! My official time was 1:44:11, over two minutes faster than my last 1/2 marathon. I'm so proud of my girls for having great finish times too, especially Carrie who had a baby 10 weeks prior. Wow, she's an inspiration!

Skyler also had a personal best finish time too. His official time was 1:35:11. His race strategy was a completely different than mine. He started at a moderate pace and then sped up the entire time. Negative splits!

I didn't realize until after a long nap that Skyler and I didn't take any post-race pictures together. Oh well, we were just sweaty anyway. Our race season is off to a great start.
