Race Report: Camp Pendleton Triathlon 2012

2012 is our 7th year of racing triathlons. We started with sprint triathlons and have moved up to Ironman. One of our first triathlons was the Camp Pendleton sprint triathlon in 2007. We haven't done many sprint triathlons since then, but this year we decided to give it another go and see how much we've improved.

The Camp Pendleton sprint triathlon consists of a 500 yard swim, 18 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run. I was most excited to try out my new triathlon bike, a Felt of course.

The ocean had a strong current that day, so in order to avoid swimming against it, you had to start further down the beach which meant a longer swim.

Skyler Swim 14:52 (2007-11:25)

The bike course is part of the Ironman 70.3 Oceanside course, so we knew it well. My bike felt so fast, but I was surprised that my split wasn't too much different than 5 years ago.

Skyler Bike + T1 0:55:00 (2007-1:05:25)

The biggest different between now and 5 years ago is my running skills. My legs no longer feel like lead weights when I start running. And when I'm finished I don't feel on the brink of collapse. That evening I ran 15 miles in preparation of my upcoming marathon (race report to come soon).

Elise Run + T2 0:23:16 (2007-0:26:42)
Skyler Run + T2 0:22:07 (2007-0:25:39)

Skyler cut off 10:30 minutes and I lost over 9 minutes. Improvement is always a good thing! This race is well-organized, close, and a new favorite. I hope we can do it every year from now on.

Elise Total Time 1:40:05 (2007-1:49:13)
Skyler Total Time 1:31:59 (2007-1:42:29)
